3 Life Lessons from Sickness

The 73 year old Gujarat Chief Minister, Anandiben Patel

Cheat Sheet Principle of Life: Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter. – Mark Twain

The lunch time at my workplace is a melting pot of discussions. The topics include politics, movies, missing planes, latest gadgets, Bangalore traffic and many more.

During one particular lunch, a good colleague of mine, told us about the life lessons he learned after succumbing to Malaria and recovering from it. Let us call him Mr. A.

#1. Life can change in an instant. There is nothing you can do about it.

Mr. A was feeling well the day before he got Malaria. In an instant, everything changed. He felt weak. All his strength drained from him. He did not have the energy to get up from his bed. He was hospitalized for 4 days.

At that moment, Mr. A realized that how quickly things can get worse.

#2. Live for a cause

Mr. A was lying in the bed. He could not sleep. He could not get up and work, because he was too weak. He watched the clock move slowly. He told us that he felt as though one minute was an hour. At that point of time, he realized how painful old age can be. He said, ‘You have to live for a cause, a passion, otherwise old age will be difficult to survive.’

Another colleague interjected and said, ‘Yes, I agree with that. You have to keep your brain busy and take care not to get Alzheimer’s or any other brain diseases.

You usually hear complaints from people, 2 or 3 months after they retire. Until the point of retirement, their brain had goals and timelines to keep them fit. After they retire, the brain loses direction and slowly moves towards becoming a vegetable.

Look at our Indian politicians. The Gujarat Chief Minister, Anandiben Patel is about 75 years old and active. ‘

I agree with him. We have to take inspiration from our Indian Politicians. They remain young by jumping from kursi to kursi (position to position). Given a chance, they will strive to become the President of United States of America at a young age of 95.

#3. Health is more than Wealth

This is something I felt as Mr. A was recounting his experience.

Both my parents, being Doctors, always stressed the importance of being physically and psychologically fit. Now, with rise of the healthcare costs, it has become essential to take preventive measures to not get sick.

You can enjoy any material comfort only if you are healthy, otherwise all your money will be spent on becoming healthy.

Have a cause that is larger than your life! The cause will keep you occupied and healthy.
